The NHS is being dismantled with terrifying speed. There is a very, very strong risk now that we will lose the NHS, as it gets cut, fragmented and dished out to the private sector.
Lansley's Health & Social Care Bill returns to parliament for it's third reading on 6-7th September. Despite all of the media hype about the Tories taking a pause to listen, and watering down the bill, if the bill is passed it will mean a bonanza for the privatees, and the end of the NHS as we know it. Instead we will be left with a mad rush to the American model of health care, where those that can afford to pay are treated, and the rest of us left to rot.
A couple of weeks ago, a group of Tory MPs were boasting about the opportunities for a health insurance scheme, where the state covers you for ‘catastrophe illness’ but you buy your own cover for any ongoing healthcare you might need. USA, here we come.
Anti-cuts groups are out campaigning in a number of regions the weekend of 3rd and 4th, supported by Unite and other unions, with vigils organised by the TUC – again around the country – on 7th September (the date of the Third reading of the Health and Social Care Bill).
Plymouth Fightback has called a morning protest at Derriford Roundabout, Tavistock Road, from 8am on Tuesday 6th September. Please try to attend.
Then, Wednesday 7th, we have called a public meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 7th September at the Quaker House, Mutley Plain. We will be showing the new documentary, “Wake Up Call – the Return of Fear” with acclaimed health campaigner, Professor Allyson Pollock (author of NHS plc) defending the core values of the National Health Service.
On Sunday 11th, in the wake of the Parliamentary decisions, we will take our protest to the Mayflower Steps at the Barbican, to challenge the privatising pirates and demand the rich pay their taxes. From 12 midday.
