Strike to Defend Pensions - May 10th

E-mail Print PDF

The Pensions Fight is Back On!

Workers in Health, Education and the Civil Service are experiencing the Con-Dem cuts first hand. As the economy slips into double dip recession, with no prospect of a pay rise, and with inflation still around the 4% mark, April pay packets have the deduction of the new Pay More, Work Longer, Get Less pensions.

But we are not taking this lying down - on Thursday May 10th, PCS, UCU, Unite Health, Unite MOD, Nipsa in Northern Ireland and RMT Royal Fleet Auxiliary - around 475,000 workers are set to strike.

This is not the 2.5 million that held the fantastic strike on November 30th last year, but is a great chance to get the pensions fight back on track, and give the weak and vicious government a bloody nose.

In Plymouth, Trades Council have called a march and rally in the City Centre - details below:

Thursday May 10th

Rally 12 noon assemble outside the Guildhall, Armada Way

Everybody welcome - whether you are on strike or not, join us. Bring you banners, placards, whistles or vuvuzelas!

Defend the NHS - Lobby PCH

E-mail Print PDF

Thursday 15th March – Plymouth Defend the NHS Lobby

Plymouth Community Healthcare (PCH) is holding a Public Consultation at the Plymouth Guildhall 11:30am – 2pm on Thursday 15th March. PCH is the social enterprise body that has detached all community health, including Mount Gould Hospital, mental health services and GPs, from the NHS. By 2015 the whole sector will have been “bought-up” by private providers.

There was NO public consultation before the Strategic Health Authority decided to hand over YOUR primary health to this unaccountable, unelected body - now we have a chance to tell them what we think!

We have to defend the NHS. Come to the lobby of the PCH Consultation and afternoon meeting at the Plymouth Guildhall – bring banners, placards and whistles. Tell everyone – Defend the NHS!

May Day 2012

E-mail Print PDF

May Day is International Workers' Day!

The Con-Dem government, that no-one voted for, continues to destroy OUR welfare state, passes laws to privatise OUR NHS, attacks working class people, caps or cuts OUR pay and conditions, cuts jobs, makes it easier for bosses to sack workers and tries to force us to pay more, work longer and get less pensions. This is justified as necessary to 'reduce the deficit' - in reality to make us all pay for the thousands of billions of pounds used to bail out the bankers. Tory ministers like to say that we are all in it together, but as last month's budget makes clear, it's cuts in tax for the rich, and cuts in everything else for us!

The unions are at the forefront of the fight to defend us from these attacks, and Plymouth TUC are proud to lead the fightback.

Join us on May 1st for our May Day march & rally -

March - Assemble 5pm outside the guildhall, Armada Way

Rally - 7pm at 171, Armada Way

Tories End Pensions Talks

E-mail Print PDF

Talks over plans to "reform" public sector pensions are over, the government has declared.

The Tories will now try to impose serious attacks on the pensions. This is despite the fact that a number of union leaderships have rejected the plans and many are still consulting members.

The move shows up the government's claim to be taking talks seriously was always a sick joke.

The government wants to force millions of public sector workers to work longer, pay more into their pensions each month and get less when they retire.

It plans to impose stark rises on workers' pension contributions from next month.

Several union leaderships have rejected the plans. Others have deferred making any decision on them.

The NUT, PCS, UCU and EIS are currently consulting their members on further action after the magnificent strike on 30 November last year. They could be part of a 750,000-strong strike on 28 March.
